  South Africa's Unemployment Rate Rises to 33.6% in Q2 2026 South Africa's unemployment rate climbed to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 32.7% in the first quarter, according to new figures from the national statistics department. The number of unemployed people rose to 8.5 million, while the number of employed people fell by 16,000 to 16.7 million. The data shows job losses across key sectors including community and social services, mining, agriculture, manufacturing and utilities. The steepest declines were recorded in the Western Cape, Gauteng, and North West provinces. Officials did not provide clear reasons for the downturn, leaving the main drivers of the rising unemployment rate uncertain.

Prof. Wole Soyinka leads Pirates members to pay last respects to former ASUU president, Prof. Biodun Jeyifo, at burial in Ibadan


Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka today led members of the Pyrates Confraternity as they paid their last respects to Emeritus Prof. Biodun Jeyifo, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).


Prof. Jeyifo, who died at the age of 80, was laid to rest in Ibadan, Oyo State.


Members of the confraternity, popularly known as the Pirates, gathered alongside family, friends and colleagues to honour the late scholar, who was widely respected in academic and intellectual circles.
