PROPERTY DESTROYED AS FIRE GUTS BUILDING BEHIND MAKURDI INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL

A fire broke out Wednesday night behind Makurdi International Secondary School, opposite Gwuve U Tiv residence, destroying a building and raising fears among residents.

The blaze reportedly started at a carpentry workshop after the owners burned refuse in a gutter outside their shop and left without ensuring it was fully out. By 8:00 pm, the fire had spread to wooden furniture stored nearby, intensifying the flames.

The fire soon engulfed an adjacent building rented by a church, prompting passersby to raise the alarm. Initial attempts to reach the Federal Fire Service were delayed as access to their station was blocked by road reconstruction.

The Benue State Fire Service eventually arrived and brought the fire under control, preventing further damage to neighboring buildings.

No injuries have been reported, but property losses are yet to be fully assessed. Residents expressed concern over the dangers of unattended fires and called for better preparedness in emergencies.

State fire officials have urged residents and business owners to exercise caution when disposing of waste and to ensure fires are fully extinguished to prevent similar incidents.
