Stephen Colbert to co-write new Lord of the Rings movie with son and Philippa Boyens

Stephen Colbert, a longtime fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, is set to co-write a new “Lord of the Rings” film alongside his son, Peter McGee, and veteran series writer Philippa Boyens. Warner Bros. confirmed the project on Wednesday, revealing that the movie, titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, will follow a fresh adventure for Sam, Merry, and Pippin, taking place 14 years after Frodo’s passing. Peter Jackson announced Colbert’s involvement in a social media video, calling him a “very special partner” on the film.

Colbert said the idea originated during a conversation with his son, inspired by six early chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring that were not fully adapted in the first film. He aimed to craft a story that remained faithful to both Tolkien’s books and the earlier movies. The new movie will follow Andy Serkis’ The Hunt of Gollum, scheduled for release next year. Colbert, whose The Late Show on CBS is ending May 21 following its cancellation last July, said he and Boyens have been collaborating with Jackson for the past two years to develop the story.
