Cuba’s president rejects calls to step down amid escalating tensions with Trump administration Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said he will not step down from office, rejecting suggestions that he should resign during an interview conducted in Havana in his first appearance with a U.S. broadcast network. When asked whether he would consider leaving office to help stabilize the country, Díaz-Canel pushed back sharply, saying Cuba’s leadership is not chosen by the United States and insisting the nation operates as a sovereign state. He added that stepping down “is not part of our vocabulary,” and defended Cuba’s political system as one based on domestic elections at the local level. A FORMER MIDWIFE HAS BEEN FOUND GUILTY AFTER A BABY DIED AND SEVERAL PREGNANT WOMEN WERE HARMED IN SOUTH AFRICA. (PHOTO).

A former midwife has been found guilty after a baby died and several pregnant women were harmed in South Africa

The Pretoria High Court convicted Yolande Maritz Fouchee, 48, of culpable homicide, fraud, assault and employing an unqualified person.

Fouchee, Midwife-led Maternity Care in Murrayfield between 2019 and 2020. She treated pregnant women while ignoring serious complications and failing to send them to specialists.

The court heard that she falsely claimed she could handle normal and low-risk births. Prosecutors said she secretly gave pregnant women water mixed with Cytotec or Oxytocin to speed up labour without their knowledge.

One mother went into labour after being given the drugs in April 2019. Her baby, 9-day-old Noah Von Kloeg, died days later because of complications the court found had been overlooked.

Fouchee denied all charges. But testimony from victims, her own daughter and medical experts from Steve Biko Academic Hospital convinced the court that she was guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

She will return to court for sentencing on 25 May 2026.
