 Hungary votes in high-stakes election as Viktor Orbán faces strongest challenge in years

   Hungarians voted Sunday in a high-stakes national election widely viewed as one of Europe’s most consequential contests this year, with record turnout signaling the significance of a race that could end Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 16-year hold on power.

Orbán, the European Union’s longest-serving leader, has transformed politically over decades from a liberal, anti-Soviet figure into a nationalist leader known for close ties with Russia and alignment with global far-right movements. Polls opened early in the morning and were set to close in the evening, with Orbán and his main challenger, Péter Magyar, casting their ballots in Budapest within minutes of each other.

Speaking after voting, Orbán expressed confidence in his campaign and thanked supporters, emphasizing his intention to win. By mid-afternoon, turnout had already surpassed 74%, the highest in Hungary’s post-Communist history, with more voters participating before polls closed than in the entire 2022 election.

The election has drawn international attention due to Orbán’s stance on major geopolitical issues. He has repeatedly opposed European Union efforts to support Ukraine in its war against Russia and has maintained strong ties with Russian leadership while keeping Hungary reliant on Russian energy. Allegations have also surfaced that members of his government shared sensitive EU discussions with Moscow.

Magyar, a former insider within Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party, has emerged as his strongest challenger. Leading the center-right Tisza party, he has campaigned on improving public services and addressing corruption, framing the election as a defining choice about Hungary’s future direction. After casting his vote, he described the race as a decision between opposing visions for the country’s political and social path.

Orbán’s time in power has been marked by controversial reforms, including restrictions on media freedom and changes to state institutions, along with ongoing tensions with the European Union. Despite Hungary’s relatively small population, he has frequently used veto power within the bloc to block key decisions, most recently halting a major financial package intended for Ukraine.

While Orbán has won four consecutive elections with large parliamentary majorities, signs have emerged that his dominance may be weakening. Magyar’s rapid rise, fueled by widespread campaigning across the country, has reshaped the political landscape and made the race more competitive than in recent years.

Still, the opposition faces significant challenges. Orbán’s influence over public media and much of the private media sector provides a powerful platform to shape messaging, while electoral district boundaries and voting rules present additional hurdles. Analysts note that Magyar’s party may need a higher share of the vote to secure a governing majority.

The outcome is also being closely watched for potential foreign influence and internal disputes over election integrity. Competing accusations of interference and fraud have surfaced from both sides, reflecting the tense political environment surrounding the vote.
