  South Africa's Unemployment Rate Rises to 33.6% in Q2 2026 South Africa's unemployment rate climbed to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 32.7% in the first quarter, according to new figures from the national statistics department. The number of unemployed people rose to 8.5 million, while the number of employed people fell by 16,000 to 16.7 million. The data shows job losses across key sectors including community and social services, mining, agriculture, manufacturing and utilities. The steepest declines were recorded in the Western Cape, Gauteng, and North West provinces. Officials did not provide clear reasons for the downturn, leaving the main drivers of the rising unemployment rate uncertain.

 Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat in the country's elections after 16 years in power, marking a significant shift in the nation's politics. Orbán's Fidesz party was defeated by the centre-right, pro-EU Tisza party led by Péter Magyar, which has wona two-thirds majority in the 199-seat parliament.  

This outcome could end Hungary's adversarial role in the European Union and potentially pave the way for a $105 billion loan to Ukraine , The election result is seen as a major setback for Orbán's allies, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who had endorsed Orbán for the election. 

The Tisza party's victory could lead to reforms aimed at combating corruption and restoring the independence of the judiciary and other institutions
