  South Africa's Unemployment Rate Rises to 33.6% in Q2 2026 South Africa's unemployment rate climbed to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 32.7% in the first quarter, according to new figures from the national statistics department. The number of unemployed people rose to 8.5 million, while the number of employed people fell by 16,000 to 16.7 million. The data shows job losses across key sectors including community and social services, mining, agriculture, manufacturing and utilities. The steepest declines were recorded in the Western Cape, Gauteng, and North West provinces. Officials did not provide clear reasons for the downturn, leaving the main drivers of the rising unemployment rate uncertain.

INEC has postponed the nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.


Statement by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna says the commission reconsiders its earlier position after a meeting with resident electoral commissioners.
