LAGOS CHILD PROTECTION AGENCY INTERVENES IN DISTURBING CASE OF ABUSE LINKED TO SUPERSTITION

The Lagos State Government has rescued a severely malnourished child allegedly abandoned after being accused of witchcraft, in a case that has sparked widespread concern over child abuse and superstition-driven neglect. The child, found in critical condition, is currently receiving urgent medical care while authorities launch investigations into those responsible.

Cases of child abandonment linked to witchcraft accusations have remained a recurring social challenge in parts of Nigeria. Advocacy groups have repeatedly warned that such beliefs often expose vulnerable children to abuse, starvation, and avoidable deaths.

According to officials, the child was discovered in an emaciated state and was barely responsive at the time of rescue. The intervention followed a viral video that drew public attention and prompted swift action from child protection agencies.

The child was immediately placed in protective custody and transferred to a medical facility for emergency treatment and rehabilitation. Authorities confirmed that efforts are ongoing to trace caregivers allegedly involved in the abandonment.

Government officials have condemned the incident, describing it as a serious violation of child rights. They reiterated commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable will face prosecution under relevant child protection laws.

Child welfare advocates have also called for stronger community education to counter harmful superstitions fueling such cases.

Authorities say the rescued child remains under close medical supervision and is expected to undergo long-term rehabilitation. Investigations are ongoing as Lagos intensifies efforts to prevent similar cases across the state.
