 Flights suspended to Ethiopian holy town of Lalibela as fighting expands Flights to the historic Ethiopian town of Lalibela ​were suspended on Thursday due to fighting nearby, seven sources said, as residents in the Tigray region to the north stocked up on food and ‌cash, fearing that renewed fighting could trigger another major war. Tigrayan forces seized three local airports and launched attacks in Afar and Amhara regions with allies there this week, in the most serious escalation since a devastating 2020-22 war against Ethiopian government troops. In its first public comments on the fighting, Ethiopia's army said on Thursday that it had foiled the attacks and killed, wounded or captured more than 500 enemy fighters. The United Nations ​and the European Union called for restraint and a return to the African Union-brokered peace process that had ended a conflict that killed hundreds of thousands of people.  NIGERIA AND MEXICO COMMEMORATE 50 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS


Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with the United Mexican States, established on April 14, 1976.


In a statement, the Ministry noted that the five‑decade‑old partnership, founded on respect for sovereignty, non‑interference, and shared commitment to global peace, has remained a stable and mutually beneficial partnerships. 


Both countries coordinate closely within the UN and have expanded cooperation in trade, investment, energy, agriculture, education, culture, and technical exchange. Recent efforts focus on economic diplomacy, private-sector engagement, trade diversification, and emerging areas such as renewable energy. 


The Nigerian Government acknowledges the role of dialogue, institutional cooperation, and people‑to‑people ties in consolidating this relationship, which reflects shared goals of inclusive growth, sustainable development, and South‑South cooperation.


As Nigeria and Mexico mark this golden jubilee, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to deeper ties through high‑level engagements and strategic cooperation, and congratulates both governments and peoples, expressing confidence in even greater dividends ahead.
