Obama’s Higher Ground production company ends Netflix exclusivity, shifts to independent model

Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is moving toward an independent operating model after eight years of collaboration with Netflix.

Barack Obama announced the shift during a Saturday event in Philadelphia that brought together figures from media, sports, and entertainment as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. Both Barack and Michelle Obama appeared on separate panels where they discussed the company’s work and future plans.

The former president said the company is grateful for its long-running partnership with Netflix but is now transitioning toward a structure that will allow it to work with a wider range of studios and platforms.

Higher Ground originally signed a production deal with Netflix in 2018, later extending that relationship in 2024 through a multiyear first-look arrangement covering film and television projects.

Over the years, the company has been behind several high-profile projects, including Rustin, American Symphony, and Crip Camp, along with American Factory, which won both an Oscar and an Emmy. Other credits include the series Bodkin and the apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind.

More recently, Higher Ground has expanded its development slate beyond Netflix, including projects with other outlets such as HBO. One of its upcoming releases is a sketch comedy series titled Life Larry, along with The Pursuit of Unhappiness, created by Larry David and Jeff Schaffer, which is scheduled to debut in June.

The Philadelphia event also featured a wide range of public figures from politics, sports, and entertainment, underscoring the high-profile nature of the anniversary celebration.
