Sinaloa governor, officials charged in US drug trafficking case
A U.S. federal indictment has charged the governor of Sinaloa and nine other current and former Mexican officials with drug trafficking and weapons offenses, alleging they played key roles in facilitating the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States. The charges, unsealed in New York, target a mix of political figures and law enforcement officials, including Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, who has led the state since 2021. Prosecutors allege the defendants conspired to import drugs and possessed prohibited weapons, offenses that could carry severe penalties, including life in prison. None of those charged were in custody, and Mexican authorities said they had received multiple extradition requests but did not specify how they would proceed.
Several of the accused are linked to Mexico’s ruling Morena party, creating political pressure for President Claudia Sheinbaum as she navigates tensions with the Trump administration. Rocha, the most prominent figure named, denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated, and said he has no plans to leave Sinaloa. The indictment also names other high-ranking figures, including a senator, a deputy attorney general in Sinaloa, former public security officials, and the mayor of Culiacán.
According to the charges, the group is accused of working closely with the Sinaloa Cartel, particularly a faction known as “Los Chapitos,” tied to the sons of imprisoned cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Prosecutors allege the officials protected cartel leaders from arrest, shared sensitive law enforcement information, and directed authorities to safeguard drug shipments while allowing violent criminal activity to proceed unchecked. In exchange, they allegedly received millions of dollars in illicit payments.
Authorities say the accused helped enable the trafficking of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine into the United States. The case highlights longstanding concerns about corruption within public institutions and its role in sustaining organized crime operations. The Sinaloa Cartel remains one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the region.
The indictment adds to a complex political situation for Sheinbaum, who has already faced pressure to intensify efforts against cartel activity. Her administration has detained several local officials as part of ongoing anti-cartel operations. However, the charges against high-level political figures present a difficult balancing act, as pursuing action against them could have significant domestic political consequences while failing to act could strain relations with the United States, particularly as the two countries approach negotiations over a key trade agreement.
