Sacramento police are searching for a high school student believed to be responsible for a deadly shooting that occurred Friday afternoon.
The incident took place around 3:30 p.m. in an open area of Natomas High School’s campus on Truxel Road. Authorities confirmed that the victim, a teenager from a nearby school, was fatally shot.
“We have a child that has been killed,” said Sacramento police spokesperson Anthony Gamble, emphasizing the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on the community.
Emergency crews concentrated their response on the school’s quad and gymnasium, while a SWAT team was deployed to a nearby apartment complex with 240 units.
Investigators went door to door, and relatives of the suspected shooter gathered outside, urging the individual to turn themselves in.
The victim, identified as a former Natomas High School student, was mourned by the Natomas Unified School District, which expressed condolences to the family, friends, and school community affected by the loss.
Although no motive has been disclosed, district officials informed families that the victim was specifically targeted.
In response, a planned Multicultural Festival was canceled, and counselors will be available to support students coping with the tragedy.
The district also announced that security measures will be heightened across campuses to reassure families and protect students in the aftermath of the shooting.
