Traffic co-founder Dave Mason, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, dies at 79

Dave Mason, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician and co-founder of Traffic, has died at the age of 79.

Mason passed away at his home on Sunday, April 19. No cause of death was immediately disclosed.

In a statement, his representative said the family shared “deep and profound sadness” over his passing, noting that he died peacefully at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada. The statement described Mason as a celebrated songwriter, musician, singer, and author who devoted his life to music and those he loved.

A message shared on Mason’s social media account said he spent his final day cooking dinner with his wife, Winifred, before resting with his dog nearby. He reportedly died peacefully in his favorite chair at home in the Carson Valley, a place he loved deeply.

The tribute described his passing as peaceful and on his own terms, calling it a “storybook ending” and saying his music left a lasting mark on fans around the world.

Mason rose to prominence in the 1960s as a founding member of Traffic before launching a successful solo career. He was known for songs including “Feelin’ Alright?,” “Only You Know and I Know,” and “We Just Disagree.”

In recent years, he stepped back from touring after canceling shows in 2024 due to a serious heart condition. In 2025, he announced his retirement from live performances, citing ongoing health challenges.

He is survived by his wife Winifred Wilson, his daughter Danielle, extended family members, and relatives. He was preceded in death by his son and sister.
