A simple, offhand comment from her daughter ended up changing the way Nelson saw herself and what she felt comfortable wearing.
“Lily just said it so casually, like it wasn’t even a big deal,” Nelson recalled. “That’s what really stayed with me.”
For Nelson, the moment was unexpectedly eye-opening. She admitted that at a certain age, many people begin to feel there are things they are no longer “meant” to wear, but her daughter clearly did not see it that way.
Encouraged by that relaxed confidence, Nelson later decided to try on the tiny two-piece swimsuit while she was alone, even though part of her initially wondered if Lily had been joking.
The first feeling, she admitted, was vulnerability.
“I felt a bit exposed,” she said.
Still, rather than put it away, she found ways to make the look feel more like herself, pairing the swimsuit with a cover-up and a sun hat.
As she later joked on Instagram, “I’ve never met a bathing suit that a few accessories didn’t help.”
What took even more courage than wearing it, however, was deciding to share the moment publicly.
Nelson said posting a video of herself in the bikini made her far more nervous than actually trying it on.
The clip has since gone viral, drawing more than 90,000 likes and a flood of supportive comments from people inspired by her confidence.
She explained that seeing other women confidently share their bodies online helped push her to do the same, even as she openly acknowledged how much her body has changed over the years.
“This body has definitely changed,” she said, noting that it has been through three pregnancies and an appendectomy.
Rather than hide that reality, Nelson leaned into it, choosing honesty over insecurity.
The response online was overwhelmingly warm, with many viewers praising her boldness and self-assurance.
Comments poured in with messages like, “You look absolutely amazing,” and, “Wear the damn bikini.”
For Nelson, the moment has shifted something deeper than just fashion.
“I might just wear it again,” she said with a laugh. “At this age, who am I trying to impress?”
