 Panic has engulfed the Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State following the gruesome murder of a female nursing student whose decapitated body was discovered in her room on Thursday evening.

The victim, identified as Wendy Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing, Umuadara Umulogho, was found beheaded after concerned neighbours forced open her door when she failed to respond to repeated calls.

Achumba, who hailed from Abia State, had reportedly completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic training at the institution.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the door to the apartment was still locked from the inside when neighbours gained entry. The victim’s mobile phone was reportedly missing, while checks by those at the scene ruled out sexual assault.

Another resident, identified as Ike, expressed shock at the incident, noting that the deceased was seen alive just a day earlier.

“We don’t know who did this or why she was killed,” he said. “When we forced the door open, it was still locked from the inside... her phone was missing.”

The killing has sent shockwaves through the community and the College of Nursing, with students said to be living in fear. Tension escalated further as angry youths confronted policemen who arrived at the scene. As of the time of filing this report, the corpse had not yet been evacuated.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, said the command has launched a full investigation into the killing.

“The Command is aware of the tragic incident involving the death of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, whose body was discovered in her private off-campus apartment,” Okoye stated.

He added that the Divisional Police Officer and operatives promptly visited the scene, after which the body was recovered and deposited in the morgue.

“Investigations have commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and arrest those responsible,” the police spokesperson said.

Okoye appealed to students and members of the public to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is under control and that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrators to justice.
