Cambridge shooting leaves at least one injured after gunfire erupts into traffic; suspect arrested, police say

At least one person was injured Monday afternoon after a gunman opened fire into moving traffic in Cambridge, Massachusetts, authorities said.

The shooting happened near Memorial Drive and River Street around 1:30 p.m., according to officials. Emergency responders treated at least one victim for a gunshot wound. A suspect was later taken into custody at the scene, with aerial footage showing the arrest unfolding nearby.

Video from the area also showed a black Dodge sedan off the roadway after what appeared to be a crash, along with a rifle seen lying in the grass nearby.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said there is no ongoing threat to the public but urged residents to avoid the area while law enforcement continues its work.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the gunfire broke out. One witness said she had been in a school van when the shooting began and ran from the area on foot, saying, “I was running for my life.”
