Damon Wayans Sr., best known for In Living Color, has always believed his children would follow in the family’s comedic footsteps. Speaking about his eldest son, Damon Wayans Jr., he described him as universally loved and down-to-earth, often dressing simply despite his success.
Wayans Sr. recalled encouraging his son to pursue comedy early on, telling him that he needed to learn the family business once he became a father himself. His second son, Michael, also showed remarkable talent, though he preferred writing over performing.
Known for his intellectual curiosity, Michael often carried books on quantum theory as a child, though his fear of stand-up comedy kept him from the stage.
Wayans Sr. shares four children Damon Jr., Michael, Cara, and Kyla with his ex-wife Lisa Thorner, whom he was married to from 1984 until 2000. Reflecting on family life, he remembered spending time with Eddie Murphy, who admired the closeness of the Wayans household.
Murphy, despite his fame, often expressed envy for the family dynamic, later building a large family of his own. Wayans Sr. noted that Murphy’s true fulfillment came not from stardom but from achieving the family life he always wanted.
Beyond his immediate family, Wayans Sr. maintains strong bonds with his In Living Color castmates, describing them as an extended family.
He explained that whenever they reunite, the camaraderie and humor flow effortlessly, regardless of time apart. Currently, Wayans Sr. is partnering with Genentech and Diatribe on the “All Eyes on DME” campaign to raise awareness about diabetes.
True to his comedic nature, he joked that the first thing he’ll say to Jim Carrey when they meet again is a playful comment about his face highlighting the irreverent humor that defines his friendships and career.
