FG Approves 50% Train Fare Discount For Eid-el-Kabir

As Muslim faithful across Nigeria prepare for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Federal Government has announced a 50% reduction in train fares nationwide to ease travel costs during the festive period.

Osima Gift Seddon disclosed the gesture in a statement on behalf of the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Transportation.

The temporary fare reduction, approved through the Federal Ministry of Transportation, will take effect from Tuesday, May 26, and run until Monday, June 1, 2026.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, said the initiative is part of government efforts to cushion transportation expenses for Nigerians during the Sallah season, when travel demand is usually high.

Under the arrangement, passengers traveling on any Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, route will pay only 50% of the existing approved fares throughout the period.

The Ministry also disclosed that passengers who purchased tickets at the old rates before the announcement will not lose out. They will receive a rebate equivalent to half the ticket cost, which can be used for future train trips before the expiration date.

Authorities said train schedules and operational timetables remain unchanged. Passengers are advised to comply with travel guidelines and arrive at stations early to avoid congestion.

The Federal Ministry of Transportation said the intervention reflects the government’s commitment to supporting citizens and promoting safe, affordable, and efficient rail transportation during the festive season.
