‘I’LL TAKE YOU OUT OF SENATE’ – SENATE IN CHAOS AS AKPABIO, OSHIOMHOLE CLASH OVER AMENDED STANDING RULES. (VIDEO/PHOTO).

The Senate chamber was thrown into disarray on Wednesday for over 15 minutes following a heated confrontation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

The disruption erupted when Senate President Akpabio began reading the Votes and Proceedings of the previous day’s sitting. Senator Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) raised a point of order, which Akpabio immediately ruled out of order, citing the 2023 Standing Rules that prohibit such interventions at that stage.

Oshiomhole persisted despite the ruling, prompting Akpabio to invite former Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, to clarify the rules. Kalu backed the Senate President’s position. Chief Whip Senator Tahir Monguno also warned that continued disruption could lead to the invocation of disciplinary measures.

A visibly irritated Akpabio rebuked Oshiomhole, saying: “We should not just go home, buy forms and come here without knowing the rules.” He further warned the Edo North senator: “If you become unruly, we will use the rules to take you out of the Senate.”

Order was eventually restored after several minutes of tension. Senator Adamu Aliero then moved for the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings, which was seconded by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro.

The clash is linked to the Senate’s recent controversial amendment of its Standing Rules on Tuesday. The Red Chamber amended Orders 4 and 5, restricting eligibility for presiding and principal offices — including Senate President and Deputy Senate President — to only senators who have served at least two consecutive terms, including the current one.

The amendment effectively bars first-term senators from contesting key leadership positions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
