Thomas Markle, the estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex, has returned to the United States after living in the Philippines, where he relocated to escape the ongoing drama surrounding his rift with Meghan and Harry.
The 81‑year‑old nearly died last year after a blood clot led to the amputation of his left leg below the knee.
He praised the Filipino doctors and nurses for saving his life and revealed he now hopes to be fitted with a modern prosthetic limb while being closer to family.
During his time in Cebu, Markle found companionship with nurse Rio Canedo, who supported him through rehabilitation and helped him regain strength.
The pair shared an emotional farewell at the airport, promising to stay in touch, with Markle hopeful she will visit him in the U.S. soon.
He credited Canedo with inspiring him to lose weight and motivating him to walk again, noting his next steps include using an electric wheelchair and eventually a prosthetic leg.
Markle’s return also places him geographically closer to Meghan and her family, though he has yet to meet Prince Harry or his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.
Despite years of estrangement, he has expressed a desire for reconciliation, saying he still loves his daughter and hopes to meet her children.
His elder daughter, Samantha, confirmed the move was for ongoing medical care and described it as a positive spiritual experience, emphasizing that he will now have access to advanced prosthetics and the support of loved ones.
