 SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives.  Onitsha Community Commends Police, Vigilantes for Improved Security and Peace

‎Residents of Fegge, Onitsha, have expressed satisfaction with the notable improvement in security within the area, stating that incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, and phone snatching have declined significantly in recent months.

‎The commendation was made during a courtesy visit by the Area Commander, Onitsha, ACP Fasugbe Temitope Olajire, to the community.

‎Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, Chief Godfrey Maduekwe, said the renewed sense of peace had restored public confidence. He noted that the security situation had improved to the extent that residents could now “sleep with their two eyes closed,” describing it as a clear indication of growing safety in the area.

‎He attributed the progress to the dedication and professionalism of the Divisional Police Officer of Fegge Police Division, CSP Effion Okon, in partnership with local vigilante groups and other security agencies.

‎Also speaking, the Managing Director of TransGlobe Pharmaceuticals, Chief Eli, commended the Area Commander for strengthening police-community relations and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at sustaining peace and security.

‎In their separate remarks, the President General of Fegge Community, Chief Okwudili Obinwanne, and the President General of Woliwo Community, Chief Ifanyi Onwuabuchi, lauded the collaboration between the police, vigilante operatives, and residents, describing it as key to the improved security currently being experienced.

‎In his response, ACP Fasugbe Temitope Olajire expressed appreciation for the cooperation of residents and urged them to maintain their support by providing timely and credible information to security agencies.

‎He emphasized that active community participation remains essential to consolidating the gains recorded in crime prevention and control within Fegge and its environs.
