SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives. Hon. Tongo passed away at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja on June 12, 2026, following a brief illness. His death triggered a...

PRESIDENT TINUBU CONGRATULATES GOVERNOR HYACINTH ALIA ON HIS 60TH BIRTHDAY

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia,  Governor of Benue State, and an ordained priest on his 60th birthday.

In a statement personally signed by President Tinubu, he says "I commend Governor Alia for his transformative efforts to industrialise the state and expand its road network. Benue State, famously Nigeria's food basket, now has tomatoes and fruit juice, beer, nylon and polythene factories, as well as a large-scale bakery, providing jobs for its people and adding value to its agricultural products. The iconic underpasses in Makurdi and Gboko have also eased traffic and improved urban life."

It adds that Governor Alia's political journey is simply that of faith made manifest, ordained a Catholic priest in 1990 by Bishop Athanasius Atule Usuh of Makurdi Catholic Diocese.

It was no surprise that his people, whom he had long served faithfully in the vineyard of the Most High, elected him as their governor in 2023, following in the footsteps of Very Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu, who served as governor of Benue State from 1992 to 1993.

The president in commending Governor Alia say under his leadership, Benue state has established a university of agriculture, science and technology and invested in improving facilities at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.

The President also commends Reverend Father Alia for ensuring peace and stability in Benue state,  particularly for his peace-building initiatives and endeavours to foster unity among the people of the state and his political family.

Reverend Alia has demonstrated that when the pulpit comes to power, positive change is possible. The President says.

While encouraging him to sustain and deepen his peace-building and security initiatives, the President wants Alia to expand his welfare programmes, and continue infrastructure development to uplift even more people across Benue State.

"As Reverend Alia celebrates this milestone, I join family, friends, and the people of Benue State in wishing him many more years of good health and strength as he continues to serve the state and the nation." He concludes
