Al-Mustapha Dismisses Ex-DSS Operative’s Claims on Abacha’s Death Former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd.), has dismissed claims made by former Department of State Services operative, Dennis Amachree, regarding the circumstances surrounding the late military ruler’s death. Al-Mustapha described the account as false and urged Nigerians to disregard it. He spoke with journalists on the sidelines of the 3rd General Hassan Usman Katsina Memorial Conference held at Arewa House in Kaduna on Saturday. His reaction followed renewed public attention on Amachree’s memoir, The Shadow Warrior, in which the retired DSS officer reportedly detailed his account of the events leading to Abacha’s death on June 8, 1998.  Mexico agrees to host Iran’s World Cup team after U.S. declines to accommodate squad, Sheinbaum says

  

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that Mexico has agreed to host the Iranian national football team during the upcoming World Cup after the United States declined to accommodate the squad.

Sheinbaum said the decision followed a request from FIFA, which sought an alternative arrangement after U.S. officials indicated they did not want Iran’s team staying in the country for the duration of the tournament, even though Iran is scheduled to play all of its group-stage matches on U.S. soil.

“We have no reason to deny them the possibility of staying in Mexico,” Sheinbaum said during her daily press conference, adding that Mexico accepted the request in coordination with tournament organizers.

Iranian football federation officials said the team’s base of operations would be relocated from Arizona to Tijuana, near the U.S.-Mexico border, to simplify travel logistics and reduce potential visa complications. The squad is expected to travel between Mexico and the match venues via Iranian carriers.

The Iranian team’s participation in the June 11 to July 19 tournament had been uncertain amid heightened regional tensions following military strikes involving Iran and Israel earlier this year.

Iran is scheduled to play its Group G matches in Los Angeles against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, before traveling to Seattle for its final group match against Egypt on June 26.
