Democracy Day: Good Governance Is a Collective Responsibility, Udeze Tells Nigerians

By Chizoba Okeke

The Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, has called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals of democracy by promoting equity, inclusiveness, unity, and national development, while maintaining strict adherence to the rule of law.

In his Democracy Day message, Udeze emphasized that the success of democracy depends not only on political structures and appointments but on the tangible benefits citizens derive from governance.

"Democracy is strengthened not by the creation of political offices and appointments, but by positive results in services, programmes, and projects that meaningfully impact the lives of the people," he stated.

The Speaker stressed that democratic governance is sustained through the collective efforts of citizens and leaders alike, noting that justice and fairness remain the pillars upon which enduring democracies are built.

"Democracy is not gifted; it is earned through the courage of citizens who insist on justice, fairness, accountability, and good governance," Udeze said.

He urged Nigerians to continue nurturing and defending democratic values while paying tribute to individuals whose sacrifices paved the way for the country's democratic journey.

"As we celebrate Democracy Day, Nigerians must continue to nurture and enforce democratic principles. We must also honour and remember the heroes of democracy, especially those who paid the ultimate price in the struggle for democratic rule," he added.

Udeze further called on the Federal Government to immortalize prominent figures who played significant roles in the nation's democratic evolution.

"The contributions of those who fought tirelessly for the restoration and sustenance of democracy should be permanently recognized and preserved for future generations," he noted.

The Speaker also commended the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for what he described as his commitment to democratic governance through inclusive leadership and people-oriented policies.

"Governor Soludo has continued to advance democracy in Anambra State by operating an inclusive government that provides opportunities for children, youths, and the elderly to participate in matters affecting their lives, while promoting peace, unity, prosperity, and sustainable development," Udeze remarked.

He concluded by urging leaders at all levels to place the welfare of the people at the centre of governance.

"Leadership must always be guided by the overall well-being of the masses. Every policy and development action should be designed to improve the lives of the people and strengthen public trust in government," the Speaker stated.

Udeze maintained that the consolidation of democracy and the delivery of good governance remain collective responsibilities that require the commitment of both leaders and citizens to achieve lasting peace, progress, and national development.
