‘How Would Lagos Exist Without Igbos?’ — Rapper Illbliss Condemns Tribalism, Hails Economic Impact

In a deeply reflective conversation, veteran Nigerian rapper and hip-hop icon, Illbliss, has challenged his fellow citizens to reject tribalistic sentiments and embrace national unity. Speaking during a recent appearance on the Outside The Box podcast, the "Aiye Po Gan" lyricist raised critical questions about the persistent ethnic divisions in Nigeria, drawing attention to how non-indigenous populations drive local economies.

The Power of Trade: How Igbos Bolster the Lagos Economy

Using Lagos State as a primary example, Illbliss highlighted the invaluable impact of the Igbo community on the state's commercial landscape. He noted that the industrious nature of Igbo traders and entrepreneurs has been a cornerstone of the state's economic prosperity for decades.

Reflecting on the divisive rhetoric that occasionally surfaces online and offline, the rapper questioned the logic of telling non-indigenes to return to their states of origin. "The Igbos have given a lot to the Lagos economy in terms of trade and commerce," Illbliss pointed out. He challenged critics to imagine the sheer economic vacuum that would be created if all Igbo businesses and traders were suddenly removed from the metropolitan hub.

The Ongoing Struggle with Ethnic and Religious Bigotry

Despite Nigeria’s long history of co-existence, Illbliss expressed deep sadness that the nation is still held back by tribalism and religious prejudice. He lamented that these divisions prevent the country from realizing its true potential as a unified global force.

According to the artist, the prevalence of exclusionary politics and social hostility makes him occasionally question the very foundation of the nation's amalgamation. He argued that Nigeria has no excuse for failing to foster an inclusive environment where all citizens, regardless of their ethnic background, feel at home and valued.

A History of Social Consciousness

This is not the first time the rapper has used his platform to speak on national issues. Known for his socially conscious lyrics and outspoken nature, Illbliss has consistently critiqued bad governance, economic neglect, and the challenges facing young Nigerians. Through his latest remarks, he joins a growing chorus of influential figures calling for systemic change, tolerance, and a collective focus on national development over ethnic rivalry.
