Selena Gomez has responded after some social media users claimed she was taking a swipe at her close friend Taylor Swift.
The singer and actress found herself at the center of online chatter after commenting "lol" under an Instagram post shared by MTV.
The post featured photos of Swift celebrating alongside actress Mariska Hargitay after the New York Knicks edged out the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.
One image showed Swift wrapping an arm around Hargitay while surrounded by fellow Knicks supporters. Another captured the pair cheering during the dramatic game.
After receiving numerous messages about the comment, Gomez took to Instagram Stories to explain what she meant.
“I woke up to so many texts,” she wrote. “I would never insult my friends, nor was it meant as an insult.”
According to Gomez, her reaction was aimed at the first photo in the carousel, where Swift appeared excited while Hargitay looked overwhelmed and rested her head on the singer's shoulder.
She also clarified another post she had shared about the game, saying she had made a friendly wager with friends and was simply teasing them after losing.
“I was joking with my friends in the group chat,” Gomez explained. “Believe it or not, I do have other friends in my life.”
She added that people often jump to conclusions online and reminded followers that the discussion was ultimately about a basketball game.
The clarification came shortly after Gomez congratulated the Knicks on their dramatic 107-106 victory over the Spurs. The comeback was one of the most remarkable in NBA Finals history.
Gomez and Swift have been close friends since 2008 when they were both linked to members of the Jonas Brothers.
Over the years, their friendship has remained one of the entertainment industry's most enduring bonds.
