The International Monetary Fund said on Monday that its staff had "open and constructive technical discussions" on a visit to Senegal and it would hold more talks over the West African country's request for a support programme.
Senegal and the Fund have been in talks to resolve a hidden debt issue since the country's then-new leaders revealed the problem in 2024.
It said IMF staff would continue discussions over policies and reforms that could be supported by a new lending programme, including measures to address debt vulnerabilities, strengthen debt management and enhance public governance.
The Fund froze its previous $1.8 billion lending programme after the larger debt pile came to light, and Senegal has been largely shut out of international capital markets, leaving it reliant on regional borrowing.
