 Court Jails Two for N14.8m Fraud in Maiduguri Justice B.T Zannah of the Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri, on Monday, July 13, 2026 convicted and sentenced two to three years imprisonment. The convicts are: Babagana Bukar and Hauwa Chabri.  The convicts were arraigned on Monday, July 13, 2026 by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a separate one -count charge for the offence of criminal misappropriation to the tune of N14,800,000.00 (Fourteen  Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira). The charge against Bukar reads: "That you, Babagana Bukar sometimes in 2025 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, dishonestly misappropriated and converted to your own use the aggregate sum of N8,800,000.00 (Eight Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira)  money belonging to Bunu Gambo Liman, being amount given to you through Babakura Umar and Bello Adamu for the supplies of 100 bags of IRS...

 Oprah Winfrey: Whitney Houston fell off stage, begged audience not to leak


At the Cannes Lions Festival, Oprah Winfrey transformed her acceptance of the LionHeart Award into a powerful reflection on purpose, responsibility, and legacy. 


Speaking with festival chair Phil Thomas, she recounted her improbable journey from rural Mississippi to becoming one of the most influential figures in media. 


Winfrey highlighted her philanthropic work, including the school she founded in South Africa, and shared personal stories about her friendship with Maya Angelou and her childhood experiences that shaped her drive to give back.


She also revisited memorable moments from The Oprah Winfrey Show, including her interview with Whitney Houston. Winfrey described how she paused filming to ask Houston about her intentions, creating one of the most impactful conversations of her career. 


Later, when Houston relapsed and fell off stage during a performance, Winfrey pleaded with the audience not to release footage that could have destroyed the singer’s reputation. Reflecting on that moment, she noted that such restraint would be unlikely today, underscoring the trust she had built with her viewers.


Throughout the discussion, Winfrey urged creators to recognize the responsibility that comes with influence. She emphasized that success should not be measured solely by money or fame, but by how individuals evolve into their best selves and contribute to others. 


Drawing from her own childhood, she recalled a Christmas when nuns brought gifts to her family, teaching her the importance of being seen and valued. That moment inspired her to create opportunities for children through her leadership academy. 


Winfrey concluded by reminding the audience that life’s challenges are not punishments but lessons meant to help people grow to the next level.
