Setting the Records Straight on  Citizen Asar Michael Sesugh's  Death The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,  EFCC,  considered it imperative to clear the air on some recent incidents at its Makurdi Zonal Directorate,  Benue State.   Operatives of the Directorate arrested 26 suspected cyber fraudsters on April 28,  2026.  They were profiled and kept in custody for further investigations after obtaining a Remand Order at a Magistrate Court.  Shortly after their arrest,  specifically on May 4,  2026,  three of the suspects sought permission to use the lavatory at the Directorate's  Holding Facility and were permitted.   They cashed in on the opportunity,  broke the toilet's roof and escaped from detention.  Several efforts were made to re- arrest them to no avail.  PRESS BRIEFING BY THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, FCT COMMAND, CP AHMED MUHAMMED SANUSI, PhD, fcai, ON THE 5TH DAY OF JUNE, 2026.

PROTOCOL

Distinguished members of the press,

I warmly welcome you all to the FCT Police Command Headquarters. Today’s briefing forms part of our ongoing efforts to keeping residents of the Federal Capital Territory informed about our efforts to safeguard lives and property across the FCT.

The achievements we present today are a testament to the resilience, professionalism, and commitment of officers and men of the FCT Police Command. They also reflect the invaluable support and cooperation of well-meaning residents whose intelligence and partnership contributed significantly to these successes.

1. ARREST OF SUSPECTED KIDNAPPERS AND RECOVERY OF FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION.

My attention was drawn to videos circulating on social media depicting four unidentified individuals in possession of AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and walkie-talkies, openly brandishing the weapons in videos and pictures dressed in military camouflage. I immediately directed a detailed forensic analysis into the origin of the content and ordered the immediate arrest of all persons connected to the videos and pictures.

Following digital forensic analysis and actionable intelligence, I directed operatives of the FCT Police VCRU Sector 5 and personnel from Zuba Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Ogu Caleb Ikechukwu, on a coordinated operation at Runji Village, Zuba, on the 25th of May, 2026 at about 3:22 a.m., where three suspects featured in the videos were arrested at their hideout, namely: Umar Babangida, 25 years old; Adamu Yeti, 22 years old; and Yahaya Idris, 24 years old, all residents of Rijana, Kaduna State.

Investigations revealed that the suspects had previously been in possession of the AK-47 rifles, which were obtained from their gang leader identified only as “Esco” from Rijana, Kaduna State who is currently at large. Further investigations also led to the recovery of additional videos and photographs from the suspects’ mobile phones showing them dressed in military camouflage while brandishing AK-47 rifles and carrying walkie-talkies.

Upon their arrest, the following exhibits were recovered from them:

1. One AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition.

2. Eight (8) phones

3. Two (2) jackknives

4. Power banks

5. More incriminating videos and pictures depicting the suspects in military camouflage brandishing arms and ammunition.

The suspects are currently in custody undergoing further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend Esco the gang leader and other members of the gang who are at large and recover the firearms.

2. ARREST OF CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY, KIDNAPPING, AND CULPABLE HOMICIDE SUSPECTS.

On the 2nd of May, 2026, following a complaint received at Apo Divisional Headquarters that one Mr. Emmanuel Chukwuemeka, male, 22 years old, had been kidnapped since the 21st of April, 2026, we immediately commenced investigation into the matter.

Leveraging digital reconstructive intelligence and in collaboration with the Benue State Police Command, operatives attached to Apo Division successfully tracked and arrested two suspects identified as Mr. Emmanuel Acha Leku, 32 years old, a native of Douala, Cameroon, and his girlfriend, Ms. Kazan Vincent, in Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

Investigations revealed that the principal suspect (Emmanuel Acha Leku) had previous dealings with the deceased, whom he claimed was an accomplice in a fraudulent scheme they orchestrated together. According to Emmanuel, after proceeds from the fraudulent activities materialized, the deceased absconded with the money and failed to remit his share.

Angered by this development, the suspect lured the deceased to a mountainous area in Lokogoma, where he murdered him. Thereafter, he used the deceased’s phone to demand a ransom of five million naira from family members in an attempt to disguise the murder as a kidnapping incident.

Further investigations revealed that after committing the crime, the suspect fled to Benue State, where he joined his girlfriend (Ms. Ms. Kazan Vincent) and was making arrangements to escape to his country of origin before his eventual arrest.

Upon his arrest, two (2) mobile phones were recovered from him including that of the deceased.

We have been able to trace the decomposing remains of the victim to the crime scene, recovered the remains which have been deposited at Sahad Hospital, Apo, for autopsy.

3. ARREST OF WANTED NOTORIOUS SUPPLIERS OF LOGISTICS AND AMMUNITION TO TERRORISTS, BANDITS, AND KIDNAPPING GANGS TERRORIZING NORTH CENTRAL STATES AND THE FCT.

Strategic intelligence-led operations by the FCT Police Command have led to the arrest of one Yau Sule, from Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, who had been wanted by the Command since 2023.

The suspect was tracked and arrested on the 2nd of June 2026 while on transit along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway. During the operation, officers recovered 81 rounds of 7.62mm live AK-47 ammunition and 100 rounds of 7.62mm belted ammunition for a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG).

The suspect, who is wanted by security agencies in several North Central states, also led operatives to the arrest of his sister, one Maria Sule, who is the wife of one Buhari Shuaibu, a wanted bandit currently at large and notorious for terrorizing communities in the FCT, Kaduna and Niger State. Maria Sule is also involved in supplying ammunition to her brother for onward sale to terrorists and bandits.

Preliminary investigations have linked the suspects to a network of logistics and ammunition suppliers supporting bandit and terrorist groups operating in Kaduna, Niger State, and border communities in the FCT.

4. ARREST OF ONE CHANCE SUSPECTS, RECOVERY OF EXHIBITS.

In our sustained efforts to rid the Federal Capital Territory of violent crimes like One chance robbery incidents, operatives of the FCT Police Command attached to the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) Sector while on routine anti-crime patrol along Giri-Lugbe road on the 15th of May 2026, observed a young lady crying for help. Upon inquiry, she informed the operatives that she had just bee robbed by suspected one chance operators who dispossessed her of her valuables before abandoning her.

Responding swiftly, the team immediately launched a hot chase and intercepted a blue Volkswagen golf vehicle with Reg. No: SKK 567 AG conveying two suspects identified as: Muhammed Muhammed, 22 yrs old and Muhammed Saidu, 20 yrs.
