A Tesla crashed into the outdoor patio of an Urbane Cafe in Simi Valley, California, on Monday afternoon, killing one person and injuring five others, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Tierra Rejada and Madera roads in a busy shopping center, according to police. A white Tesla was later seen lodged in the restaurant’s outdoor dining area following the collision.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while five others sustained minor injuries, according to fire officials. The identity of the person who died has not been released, and additional details about those injured were not immediately available.
Authorities have not said what caused the crash or whether any driver-assistance features were in use at the time of the incident.
The incident comes weeks after another Tesla crash in Texas that killed a woman and prompted a lawsuit alleging the vehicle’s driver-assistance technology played a role. Tesla has denied those claims, saying the driver manually overrode the system. Federal investigators are reviewing that case.
