Two zoo employees hospitalized after reported wolf attack at Indiana zoo enclosure

Two zoo employees were hospitalized after a reported wolf attack inside an enclosure at a northwest Indiana zoo on Wednesday, officials said.

Authorities said the incident unfolded at the Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City following the natural death of a wolf on the night of June 2. The following day, an “incident” occurred involving other wolves and animal care staff inside the exhibit.

Officials said all individuals involved were in stable condition after the attack. Reports indicate two zookeepers were injured by wolves inside the enclosure, with one employee suffering bite wounds to her neck and limbs before managing to escape. She was later found outside the enclosure with what responders described as serious injuries.

A second zookeeper was found inside the exhibit with a wolf and suffered a less severe bite to the forearm, according to reports. That employee reportedly climbed onto a structure within the enclosure before firefighters used a ladder to carefully remove them.

The zoo remained open following the incident, but the wolf exhibit was closed while staff monitored the animals and continued reviewing what happened.
