Woman Arrested Over Alleged Killing Of Co-Wife In Zaria Following Sallah Meat Dispute

The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a newly married woman, identified as Amina Maharazu, for allegedly stabbing her co-wife to death during a domestic dispute in Zaria.

The command's spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect, a resident of the Madachi B area of Gwargwaje in Zaria, is currently in police custody.

According to Hassan, police officers responded to a report from a community leader and arrived at the scene to find the victim lying in a pool of blood with severe abdominal injuries.

The victim was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment but was later confirmed dead.

The police spokesperson said the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where she is being investigated for alleged culpable homicide before possible prosecution.

He added that the Commissioner of Police commended officers in the Dan Magaji Division for their swift response and professionalism in handling the incident.

Speaking on the development, the husband of both women, Salisu Haruna, described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that the deceased had played a key role in facilitating his marriage to the suspect.

"The incident is particularly painful because it was the deceased who facilitated my marriage to the woman who eventually became the cause of her death," he said.

Haruna explained that the suspect, who is originally from Kano State, had been living in the area with her mother before he married her.

He further alleged that the suspect often became suspicious whenever her child cried, frequently accusing members of the senior wife's household of mistreating the child.

Sources within the community told reporters that the altercation may have been triggered by a disagreement over the sharing of Sallah meat, with the suspect allegedly accusing the deceased's children of receiving a larger portion than her own child.

Residents also claimed that the suspect had previously been involved in disputes over minor issues, particularly those involving children, while the deceased was widely regarded as a peaceful and patient member of the community.

The deceased, according to sources, had been married for many years and was survived by eight children and several grandchildren.

Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
