A crocodile dragged a 12-year-old boy into the Ghaghra River in Bahraich as his uncle tried to save him.
The body was recovered later in the evening, deepening concern among residents living along the river. The incident took place on Tuesday when the victim had accompanied his uncle, Udayraj Singh, to work on their agricultural field near the Ghaghra River.
While at the site, the boy went to the riverbank to relieve himself when a crocodile lying in wait attacked him. Eyewitnesses said the boy struggled desperately to free himself while his uncle raised an alarm. Hearing the cries, nearby farmers and villagers rushed to the spot and hurled stones and bricks at the crocodile in an attempt to force it to release the child.
However, the reptile reportedly tossed the boy several times in the water before pulling him into deeper waters. Please Note: To avoida crocodile attack, always assume any body of water in crocodile territory is inhabited. Stay at least 16 feet (5 meters) from the water's edge, avoid lingering in the same spot, and never clean fish or dump bait near the shore, as the scent acts as an atractant.
