Former Catholic Knight arrested over alleged ritual cleansing exercise in Nnewi Vigilantes in Nnewi have arrested Sir James Louis Okoye, a former Catholic Knight of St John International, who reportedly renounced Christianity during the official opening of Our Lady of Assumpta Catholic Church, Nnewi in January this year over non-recognition of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Okoye was arrested after he was seen on Saturday wearing a red dress with fresh palm fronds between his lips, with a bell in hand, performing what he believed was the ritual cleansing of Nnewi land on the streets of the town. Okoye gained popularity in January, during the official consecration of the Nnewi Catholic Cathedral, where he decried the non-recognition Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who he believed built the cathedral to almost completion before his death.  Abia to Partner PSN to Eliminate Fake Drugs, Counterfeit Medicines


The Abia State Government has pledged to collaborate with the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) to eliminate fake and substandard medicines from the state's drug market.


Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu gave the assurance while receiving a proposal from the Abia State branch of the PSN on pharmaceutical practice and drug distribution at the Government House in Umuahia.


Emetu expressed support for the society's call for the establishment of a coordinated wholesale pharmaceutical centre in the state, saying the initiative would help curb the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard medicines while ensuring that only licensed operators participate in the pharmaceutical supply chain.


He disclosed that the proposal would be presented at the next meeting of the Abia State Security Council, stressing that tackling fake drugs requires strong collaboration among government, security agencies, regulatory institutions and professional bodies.


"The proposal is an eye-opener. Rather than chasing the problem endlessly, we must adopt a strategic approach that will effectively eliminate the menace of fake drugs and quack medicine vendors," Emetu said.


He added that a coordinated wholesale centre would improve regulation of drug distribution and make it easier to identify genuine pharmaceutical operators across the state.


The deputy governor also expressed concern over the growing incidence of kidney failure, dialysis and other life-threatening health complications linked to counterfeit and improperly dispensed medicines, attributing the trend largely to the activities of unqualified drug vendors.


Earlier, the Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Abia State branch, Chinedu Urukwem, highlighted key challenges affecting pharmaceutical practice in the state. He called for the operationalisation of the Abia State Drug Management Agency and urged the government to support the establishment of a coordinated wholesale pharmaceutical centre, among other reforms aimed at strengthening drug regulation and distribution.
