The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to conclude its emergency repatriation efforts, with the final batch of 315 Nigerian returnees from South Africa expected to arrive in Lagos on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
This development was confirmed in an official statement released on Tuesday by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The repatriation flight, operated by domestic carrier Air Peace, is scheduled to depart South Africa at 1:30 AM, with an estimated arrival time at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos set for 6:30 AM.
A Response to Xenophobic Tensions
The voluntary evacuation initiative was launched by the Nigerian government to protect its citizens following recent outbreaks of xenophobic violence and rising safety concerns in several parts of South Africa. The repatriation process was specifically organized for Nigerians who formally indicated their desire to return home due to these hostile conditions.
Prior to this final operation, the government had successfully coordinated four evacuation phases, bringing back hundreds of affected individuals. The penultimate flight brought home a group of 40 Nigerian nationals.
