Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, on, July 18, commissioned a statue of the late literary icon, Professor Chinua Achebe, at the Ugwu Nwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The unveiling ceremony, held in Achebe's hometown, attracted government officials, traditional rulers, literary enthusiasts, academics, and members of the public who gathered to celebrate the enduring legacy of one of Africa's greatest authors.
Speaking during the event, Governor Soludo described the statue as more than a monument, saying it stands as a powerful symbol of excellence, authenticity, courage, and the timeless values Professor Achebe represented.
The Governor noted that the monument embodies a message that should inspire present and future generations to emulate the life, ideals, and remarkable contributions of the literary giant.
He said Professor Achebe remains Ogidi's gift to the world and Anambra State's enduring pride, stressing that his works continue to shape global conversations on African identity, culture, leadership, and justice.
Governor Soludo further stated that the commissioning of the statue is part of the state's commitment to preserving the legacy of distinguished sons and daughters whose achievements have brought honour to Anambra and Nigeria.
He urged young people to draw inspiration from Achebe's life of discipline, scholarship, creativity, and patriotism, adding that true greatness is attained through dedication, integrity, and service to humanity.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the statue of the late Professor Chinua Achebe by Governor Soludo, accompanied by prayers and goodwill messages, marking another significant milestone in celebrating the literary icon's enduring legacy and immense contributions to humanity.
