Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, is set to pick a Christian from the Southern Kaduna Senatorial District as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election, according to sources familiar with the development.
The decision comes as the deadline for the submission of candidates and their running mates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) draws closer.
Sources said Governor Sani has opted for a faith-balanced ticket, marking a departure from the Muslim-Muslim ticket adopted by his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the 2019 election.
A source in the Kaduna State Government House said the governor had resolved that balancing the ticket along religious and zonal lines should take priority.
"The governor has decided that, for fairness, his ticket will be balanced in terms of faith. While other considerations such as age and gender were discussed, he believes faith and senatorial representation should take precedence," the source said.
The source added that Southern Kaduna would retain the deputy governorship slot, with the eventual nominee expected to be a Christian.
