… Infrastructure Upgrade to Improve Waste Evacuation Across Lagos
The Lagos State Government (LASG), through the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has commissioned the rehabilitated Road E and newly constructed disposal platforms at the Olusosun Disposal Facility, Ojota, marking another significant milestone in its efforts to strengthen waste evacuation operations and improve waste management infrastructure across the state.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the project as a strategic intervention designed to eliminate operational bottlenecks, improve access within the disposal facility and enhance the efficiency of waste evacuation operations across Lagos.
He explained that the rehabilitation of Road E became necessary following the impact of recent heavy rainfall, which affected access to parts of the facility and slowed the movement of compactor trucks responsible for evacuating municipal waste from different parts of the state.
According to him, the rehabilitated road and the additional disposal platforms would significantly improve access for waste evacuation vehicles, enable more trucks to discharge waste simultaneously and reduce turnaround time, thereby strengthening operational efficiency at one of the state's busiest waste disposal facilities.
"This project represents another important milestone in our commitment to building a more efficient and resilient waste management system for Lagos. By improving access to the disposal facility and expanding operational capacity, we are addressing immediate challenges while laying the foundation for long-term improvements in waste evacuation across the state," he said.
Dr. Gbadegesin noted that the intervention reflected Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's commitment to strengthening critical waste management infrastructure through strategic collaboration with the private sector, aimed at building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
He commended Zoomlion Nigeria Limited for rehabilitating the road as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, noting that the company's support underscored the value of public-private partnerships in delivering practical infrastructure solutions.
He added that the relationship had since evolved beyond corporate social responsibility into a broader technical collaboration supporting the engineering and management of waste infrastructure across the state.
"Waste management is highly resource-intensive, and addressing the challenges requires strategic partnerships, technical expertise and sustained investment. We are pleased that our collaboration with Zoomlion is contributing to the transformation of critical waste management infrastructure in Lagos," he stated.
The LAWMA boss disclosed that the partnership extended beyond the rehabilitation of Road E, with Zoomlion currently constructing modern Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, each designed to process 2,500 metric tonnes of waste daily, to further strengthen waste logistics across the metropolis.
He added that the Lagos State Government was simultaneously implementing other long-term infrastructure projects, including Material Recovery Facilities, waste-to-energy plants, biogas facilities and the planned acquisition of more compactor trucks of various capacities over the next three years to expand waste evacuation capacity and improve service delivery across the metropolis.
According to Dr. Gbadegesin, Olusosun currently handles about half of the municipal solid waste generated daily in Lagos, making sustained investment in critical infrastructure indispensable to maintaining efficient operations as the state progressively transitions to a more integrated, resilient and environmentally sustainable waste management system.
He reiterated that the eventual decommissioning of the Olusosun Disposal Facility would be carefully managed in phases, with adequate alternative infrastructure put in place to ensure uninterrupted waste management services across the state.
While reaffirming LAWMA's commitment to continually improving waste management services, the Managing Director urged residents to complement the government's efforts by patronising their assigned PSP operators, paying for waste collection services promptly and refraining from indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
In her remarks, the Managing Director of Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Habiba Abubakar, disclosed that the project was completed within 26 days, ahead of schedule, describing the rehabilitated road and disposal platforms as the first phase of a broader partnership with LAWMA to strengthen waste management infrastructure across Lagos.
She reaffirmed the company's commitment to supporting the State through the delivery of additional infrastructure projects that would improve waste collection, transfer and disposal across Lagos.
Also speaking, the President of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN), Dr. Olugbenga Adebola, commended the Lagos State Government, LAWMA and Zoomlion for the intervention, describing improved access to disposal facilities as critical to efficient waste evacuation operations.
He noted that the rehabilitated road and the additional disposal platforms would reduce operational bottlenecks faced by PSP operators, improve turnaround time for compactor trucks and ultimately enhance waste evacuation across the State.
Dr. Adebola expressed optimism that ongoing investments in Transfer Loading Stations and other waste management infrastructure would further strengthen the state's environmental management system and support LAWMA's long-term reform agenda.
