Laura Dern is mourning the loss of her longtime friend and Jurassic Park co‑star Sam Neill, who passed away at 78. In a heartfelt statement to Entertainment Weekly, Dern described Neill as her “beloved lifetime friend,” recalling his loyalty, protectiveness, and humor.
She reflected on their bond that began when they played Ellie Sattler and Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster, writing, “I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.”
The two actors reunited nearly three decades later in Jurassic World Dominion alongside Jeff Goldblum, rekindling their iconic dynamic while navigating dinosaur‑filled adventures once again.
Dern, who was just 23 when filming the original movie, has spoken about the age gap between herself and Neill, noting that cultural awareness today casts their on‑screen romance in a different light.
Neill himself acknowledged the 20‑year difference, recalling how he was once labeled among “old geezers” paired with younger actresses, though at the time it felt typical for Hollywood leading men.
Beyond their professional partnership, Dern and Neill shared a deep friendship that endured over the decades. Neill described their 2022 reunion as “familiar territory,” celebrating the months they spent together on set as a gift that strengthened their bond.
Spielberg also honored Neill, praising his warmth and collaborative spirit, and affirming that the Jurassic family Dern, Goldblum, and millions of fans worldwide will never forget him.
