WOMEN GROUP ADVOCATES PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AS POCACOV PLANS ANTI-CRIME APP  By Ruth Orji The President of the Ultimate Business Women and Farmers Association of Nigeria (UBWFAN), Mrs. Nkiru Nwagbo, has urged parents to lead anti-cultism campaigns to curb crime among children and youths.  She made the call during the launch of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) on July 30, at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka, describing parental guidance as essential to nation-building. Mrs. Nwagbo observed that mothers often bear the consequences of juvenile delinquency, stressing that proper moral upbringing, discipline and Godly values remain the foundation for raising responsible and productive citizens.  She also encouraged fathers to exercise emotional intelligence and restraint during family conflicts, noting that domestic violence contributes to raising aggressive children and fuels anti-social behaviour within communities.  Nigeria and Canada Move Closer to Launching Direct Flights

The Federal Government of Nigeria is accelerating plans to establish direct flight connectivity with Canada, aiming to ease travel constraints for thousands of passengers who currently rely on connecting flights through Europe and the United States.

Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, reaffirmed the government's commitment to this milestone during a high-profile meeting in Abuja with a Canadian delegation led by David Sproule, the Chargé d’Affaires of the High Commission of Canada to Nigeria.

Addressing the High Demand for Direct Routes

For years, travelers journeying between Nigeria and Canada have faced prolonged travel times due to the absence of a direct air link. Minister Keyamo expressed strong optimism about the proposed route, noting that passenger traffic data underscores a massive, consistent demand that justifies immediate action.

According to Keyamo, the establishment of direct flights aligns with the Federal Government's broader goal of opening critical international corridors. This initiative is expected to improve passenger convenience, lower travel expenses, and foster stronger economic and cultural ties between the two countries.

Resolving Immigration and Standard Operating Procedures

While both countries are enthusiastic about the prospective airline operations, the Canadian delegation raised key administrative requirements that must be addressed before final approvals are granted.

Ambassador Sproule highlighted the importance of implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at streamlining immigration processes, specifically regarding the repatriation of individuals who do not possess legal rights to remain in Canada. He explained that a direct route would naturally trigger a surge in travel volume, making robust immigration and enforcement frameworks essential to avoid overwhelming existing systems.

Inter-Ministerial Cooperation and Path Forward

Acknowledging the concerns raised by the Canadian envoy, Minister Keyamo clarified that while immigration and deportation protocols fall outside the direct jurisdiction of the Aviation Ministry, he would actively coordinate with the Ministry of Interior and other relevant authorities to resolve the bottlenecks.

"The aviation aspect is just one part of the dialogue, while immigration matters require the input of other government bodies. We are fully prepared to bridge this gap to ensure the appropriate institutions are integrated into the discussion and the agreement progresses," Keyamo stated.

Further diplomatic engagements are set to continue during a scheduled bilateral meeting on August 6, where representatives from both countries will attempt to finalize the terms of the Air Services Agreement.
