Atiku pledges scholarship to viral Niger teen miner Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday said his “heart breaks” each time he watches a viral video of a teenage artisanal miner, Yusuf Aliyu, speaking at a mining site in Niger State after the deaths of 37 miners in the state. Atiku, in a statement posted on his X handle, said he was prepared to support the boy’s education, describing him as a child whose intelligence and confidence should be nurtured in a classroom rather than by working at a mining site. “I have watched Yusuf Aliyu’s video repeatedly, and each time, my heart breaks. A child with such intelligence, clarity and confidence should be in a classroom building his future—not struggling for survival in a community surrounded by gold but buried in poverty. “I cannot look at him and see an ‘illegal miner.’ I see a Nigerian child failed by the country that should have protected him.  Nolan Wells funeral: 'We will miss everything about him,' mom says

Family and friends gathered in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to honor 18‑year‑old Nolan Wells at his funeral service. His mother, Christine Wonsley, expressed gratitude for the years they shared with him, describing her son as gentle, protective, and full of joy.

She recalled his nurturing spirit, his dreams of having daughters, and the way his presence brought comfort to those around him. Through tears, she promised that the family would continue to fight for answers about his death.

Nolan’s father, Elmore Wonsley, remembered his son’s talent and dedication to football, affectionately calling him “Mr. Cool Hands” for his consistent ability to catch touchdowns.

He spoke of the time and effort he invested in training Nolan, from workouts at the gym to drills on the beach, and how his son carried those lessons throughout high school.

He thanked the community for their support, noting how deeply Nolan’s life touched people far beyond their hometown.

Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into Nolan’s death. He pointed out that Nolan was not alone on Horn Island and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Authorities believe Nolan drowned after staying behind on the island during a July 4th boat trip, but his family has requested an independent autopsy to seek clarity.

Despite the tragedy, those who spoke at the service remembered Nolan as a bright light whose smile and energy left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
