Plateau Governor Apologises to Igbo Community for Civil War Role, Secures Endorsement for 2027
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has publicly apologised to the Igbo community for the state’s involvement in the Nigerian Civil War, describing the participation of Plateau people as a result of being “deceived.”
Speaking at an interactive session with Igbo leaders from all 17 local government areas of the state, held at the Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos, Governor Mutfwang called for both sides to close the painful chapter of the conflict and focus on unity and shared prosperity.
“I apologise to the Igbos so that we can put the past behind us and continue to foster unity. We have become one family because our people were deceived into going to war, and we regret it. We must close that chapter and move forward,” the governor said.
He urged the Igbo community to regard Plateau people as brothers and sisters, emphasising the need to create an enabling environment for collective progress.
Mutfwang commended the Igbo community for its significant contributions to Plateau State’s socio-economic development, describing them as an integral part of the state’s growth. He noted that Plateau has remained one of the most accommodating states for Igbos since the end of the civil war and recalled that compensation had been paid for some losses suffered during the conflict.
The governor further appealed to Igbo entrepreneurs operating in the state to support indigenous businesses by mentoring and investing in young Plateau indigenes.
“Nigeria is a great country, and no ethnic group has demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit more than the Igbo. I encourage you to replicate that same spirit in Plateau. I also appeal to Igbo business owners to employ and train young Plateau indigenes,” he said.
In response, leaders of the Igbo community in Plateau State endorsed Governor Mutfwang for a second term in the 2027 governorship election. The endorsement was announced by the President-General of the Igbo Community in Plateau State, Chief Chidi Onah.
“We hereby endorse Governor Caleb Mutfwang as the consensus candidate of the Igbo community for the 2027 governorship election. This endorsement is based on his competence, integrity, proven leadership and commitment to equity,” Onah said.
Chief Onah highlighted the governor’s inclusive leadership, prudent management of resources, and dedication to peaceful coexistence. He also praised Mutfwang for standing by the community during the demise of their traditional ruler and for consistently engaging stakeholders to promote unity among Plateau’s diverse ethnic groups.
