Spain requests emergency support after thousands of migrants enter Ceuta from Morocco

Spanish authorities have declared a humanitarian emergency in Ceuta after a surge of migrant arrivals overwhelmed reception facilities in the European enclave.

Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas said more than 1,500 migrants, including adults and minors, had arrived by sea in recent days, with more than 200 people entering daily.

He said reception centres had reached capacity, prompting officials to ask Spain’s central government for additional support, including possible military assistance.

Videos from Tarajal beach showed large groups of people moving across the shoreline and into nearby streets after crossing from Morocco. The groups included mostly young men, as well as some families with children.

Ceuta, located on the northern coast of Africa, is one of the European Union’s only land borders with Africa, alongside Spain’s other enclave, Melilla.

Spain’s Interior Ministry said several government departments were working together to manage the situation, while Morocco said its security forces were taking measures to prevent further crossings into Ceuta.
