 Yale enters talks with DOJ over alleged racial discrimination in medical school admissions investigation

Yale University is negotiating with the Department of Justice over a possible resolution to allegations that its medical school admissions process violated federal civil rights protections, while the university revealed that additional admissions investigations are underway.

Yale President Maurie McInnis said the DOJ’s review extends beyond the School of Medicine and includes separate investigations into admissions practices at Yale College and Yale Law School.

McInnis said the university has made changes to its admissions policies to comply with federal requirements, emphasizing that academic achievement is the primary factor considered when evaluating applicants.

The discussions follow a Justice Department investigation that concluded Yale’s medical school admissions practices may have used race as a factor in a way that violated federal law. Under federal civil rights rules, agencies typically seek voluntary agreements with institutions following such findings.

McInnis described Yale’s participation in the process as a standard step required under the law, saying the university takes compliance with federal regulations seriously.

However, some higher education legal experts have questioned whether universities should quickly agree to settlements with the Trump administration, arguing that recent enforcement actions have created uncertainty over how federal agencies are using their authority.

Critics of Yale’s decision to negotiate have urged the university to challenge the allegations in court rather than reach an agreement. They argue that legal proceedings would allow the facts and arguments surrounding the admissions practices to be fully examined.

The potential resolution talks have drawn opposition from faculty groups, student leaders and some lawmakers, who have called on Yale to defend its admissions policies and maintain transparency throughout the process.

Yale’s discussions come as the Trump administration has reached agreements with several other universities while other institutions, including Harvard University, have chosen to fight the administration’s demands through litigation.

The Justice Department has also opened reviews into admissions practices at additional medical schools, though those investigations remain ongoing.

Yale’s faculty organization has renewed calls for greater transparency and said it is considering possible legal options as the university continues negotiations with federal officials.
