Former Catholic Knight arrested over alleged ritual cleansing exercise in Nnewi Vigilantes in Nnewi have arrested Sir James Louis Okoye, a former Catholic Knight of St John International, who reportedly renounced Christianity during the official opening of Our Lady of Assumpta Catholic Church, Nnewi in January this year over non-recognition of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Okoye was arrested after he was seen on Saturday wearing a red dress with fresh palm fronds between his lips, with a bell in hand, performing what he believed was the ritual cleansing of Nnewi land on the streets of the town. Okoye gained popularity in January, during the official consecration of the Nnewi Catholic Cathedral, where he decried the non-recognition Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who he believed built the cathedral to almost completion before his death.  APC, PDP Condemn Suspension of Abia State University Lecturer Over Social Media Posts


The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has condemned the suspension of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze by the management of Abia State University (ABSU), describing the action as an assault on free speech and a sign of intolerance by the state government.


Nwaeze was suspended on Thursday over social media posts in which he criticised the university. In the posts, the lecturer claimed that commercial tricycle (Keke) riders earn more than professors at the institution.


In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the Abia APC said the suspension violated the fundamental rights of a citizen who spoke out against injustice, poor governance and declining workers’ welfare. The party accused the Abia State Government of intolerance toward constructive criticism.


“The suspension of a university professor simply because he raised concerns about the welfare of lecturers and made comments deemed ‘uncomplimentary’ to the Governor exposes the alarming level of intolerance of the Abia State Government towards dissent, constructive criticism and legitimate demands for accountability,” the statement read.


The APC questioned why Nwaeze should be punished for highlighting the plight of workers and stating that a professor at ABSU reportedly takes home less than ₦400,000 monthly, while professors in some other states earn about ₦1.4 million. The party called for his immediate reinstatement.


The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State also expressed solidarity with the suspended lecturer. In a message signed by state chairman Abraham Amah, the party said Nwaeze’s suspension stemmed from his advocacy for the rights and entitlements of members of the university community.


“We wish to assure you that you are not alone. Remain steadfast, calm and confident in the face of the development,” the PDP stated.
