 Atiku pledges scholarship to viral Niger teen miner Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday said his “heart breaks” each time he watches a viral video of a teenage artisanal miner, Yusuf Aliyu, speaking at a mining site in Niger State after the deaths of 37 miners in the state. Atiku, in a statement posted on his X handle, said he was prepared to support the boy’s education, describing him as a child whose intelligence and confidence should be nurtured in a classroom rather than by working at a mining site. “I have watched Yusuf Aliyu’s video repeatedly, and each time, my heart breaks. A child with such intelligence, clarity and confidence should be in a classroom building his future—not struggling for survival in a community surrounded by gold but buried in poverty. “I cannot look at him and see an ‘illegal miner.’ I see a Nigerian child failed by the country that should have protected him. I see brilliance trapped by poverty and enormous promise abandoned by leadership,” ...

 ARTMA CAUTIONS MOTORISTS ON WARNING SIGNS, ROAD HAZARDS, INTERSECTION SAFETY

The Anambra State Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) has urged motorists to pay close attention to warning signs, road hazards and intersection signs to prevent crashes and promote safer roads.


The agency gave the advice in a traffic safety advisory issued on Aug. 8, explaining that warning signs alert motorists to potential hazards ahead and require them to reduce speed, remain alert and drive with caution.


ARTMA said the bend sign warns motorists of dangerous curves ahead, advising them to reduce speed, maintain proper control of their vehicles and negotiate bends carefully.


It explained that the slippery road sign warns of road surfaces that may become slippery, particularly during rainfall, urging motorists to reduce speed and exercise greater caution.


According to the agency, the road narrows sign indicates that the width of the road reduces ahead, requiring motorists to slow down, maintain proper road positioning and proceed carefully.


On intersection safety, ARTMA said intersections were common locations for crashes, stressing the need for motorists to observe traffic signs, reduce speed and ensure that the road ahead was clear before proceeding.


The agency explained that the crossroad sign warns motorists that roads intersect ahead, while the T junction sign indicates that a road ends and joins another roadway.


It also highlighted the roundabout sign, which alerts motorists to an approaching roundabout, advising them to slow down, observe other road users and proceed carefully.


ARTMA urged motorists to support the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and its efforts to promote sanity on Anambra roads by driving responsibly and obeying traffic regulations.


The agency reminded motorists that staying alert, obeying warning signs and exercising caution at hazardous locations were essential to preventing crashes, urging all road users to remain vigilant and arrive alive.
