ASUU–ABSU SUSPENDS THREE-WEEK-OLD INDEFINITE STRIKE
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abia State University Branch, wishes to inform the University community, all stakeholders and the general public that, following the resolution of Congress held today, Friday, 28th August, 2026, the Branch has suspended its three-week-old comprehensive industrial action with immediate effect.
The decision of Congress followed a careful assessment of developments since the commencement of the strike and, particularly, the concrete steps taken towards addressing some of the major issues that necessitated the industrial action. Foremost among these is the full implementation of the 2025 FGN–ASUU salary structure, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), which has now been reflected in the August 2026 salaries of academic staff of Abia State University. Congress also acknowledged the payment of the outstanding arrears of check-off dues owed to the Union.
ASUU–ABSU considers the implementation of this new salary structure a significant milestone in the improvement of the welfare of academic staff of the University. The Branch therefore expresses its profound appreciation to the Visitor to Abia State University and Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr Alex C. Otti, OFR, whose goodwill, responsiveness and intervention ensured the full implementation of rge New Salary Structure in the University.
The Union notes particularly and appreciates that the Governor of Abia State is the first among the Governors in the South-East States of Nigeria to fully implement rhe 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement with CATA, EAA and Professorial Allowance for academic staff of the State-owned University. The Branch does not take this significant gesture for granted and sincerely commends His Excellency for demonstrating responsive and people-oriented governance through this action, showing his commitment to the welfare of academic staff and the continued growth and stability of Abia State University.
It was against the backdrop of these positive developments that Congress, after extensive deliberation, resolved to suspend the ongoing industrial action with effect from today, 28th August, 2026. Consequently, the Branch directs all members to resume their academic duties with immediate effect.
While Congress appreciates the progress recorded, it equally notes that some other issues affecting members remain unresolved and expects that the ongoing engagements with the relevant authorities will lead to their peaceful resolution. Congress particularly expressed serious concern over the continued suspension of Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze and maintained that the matter should be resolved without further delay.
Accordingly, Congress resolved to give the University Management one week, until Friday, 4th September, 2026, to recall Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze and lift his suspension. Congress further resolved that failure by the University Management to recall him within the stipulated period will leave the Union with no option but to resume the suspended industrial action.
As we return to our academic duties, the leadership of the Branch sincerely appreciates the unity, resilience, sacrifice and unwavering support demonstrated by members throughout the three weeks of the industrial action. The progress recorded would not have been possible without the collective resolve and steadfastness of our members.
The Branch remains committed to constructive engagement in the pursuit of the welfare of its members and the overall development of Abia State University. We therefore urge members to remain undaunted, united, vigilant and committed to the ideals of our great Union as we continue to pursue the resolution of all outstanding issues.
