Christopher McDonald says he was ‘devastated’ when Geena Davis broke off engagement after falling in love with Jeff Goldblum
Christopher McDonald recently opened up about the heartbreak he experienced when Geena Davis ended their engagement in the mid‑1980s to be with Jeff Goldblum.
Speaking at a SAG‑AFTRA Foundation retrospective, the 71‑year‑old actor recalled being “really devastated” by the split, learning the news while performing Hamlet.
He admitted that although he understood how relationships can develop on film sets, the loss left him deeply shaken.
Davis and Goldblum went on to marry in 1987 after meeting on the set of Transylvania 6‑5000, though their union ended in divorce three years later.
Fate brought Davis and McDonald back together professionally in 1991, when they played husband and wife in Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise. McDonald remembered Davis telling Scott she had once dated him, to which the director responded that it made the casting “perfect.”
McDonald later married actress Lupe Gidley in 1992, and the couple share four children. Looking back, he described working with Davis again as “great” and “really cathartic,” noting that the experience helped him reconcile with the past.
Despite the pain of their broken engagement, McDonald emphasized that reconnecting on screen allowed him to move forward both personally and professionally.
