Democrats narrow 2028 convention host city finalists to Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia
Democrats have narrowed the list of cities under consideration to host their 2028 presidential convention, selecting Boston, Denver and Philadelphia as finalists.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin said all three cities submitted strong proposals, with the party planning to choose a host later this year. Republicans have already selected Houston as the site of their 2028 convention.
The Democratic convention is scheduled for Aug. 7-10, 2028. The event will formally nominate the party’s presidential candidate, energize supporters and launch the final stretch of the campaign leading into the general election.
Atlanta and Chicago, which hosted the Democratic convention in 2024, were eliminated from consideration. Party officials visited all five cities earlier this year and evaluated factors including logistical capabilities and fundraising potential.
Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia are located in Democratic-leaning states and are surrounded by suburban communities that have become increasingly important in presidential elections. Each city also offers access to major fundraising networks and influential groups, including labor unions.
Massachusetts and Colorado have consistently backed Democratic presidential candidates in recent elections, while Pennsylvania remains a key battleground state. Trump won Pennsylvania in the 2024 presidential election.
Philadelphia previously hosted the Democratic convention in 2016, while Denver hosted in 2008 and Boston hosted in 2004.
With the 2028 presidential primary still ahead, Democrats are first focused on the 2026 midterm elections. The party hopes to regain control of the narrowly divided House and potentially win a majority in the Senate.
Democrats are also dealing with fundraising challenges and party debt, while Martin has faced criticism over his leadership of the Democratic National Committee. During a recent party meeting in Texas, Martin dismissed the criticism and urged Democrats to remain united as they prepare for the midterms and the 2028 presidential campaign.
