Denise Richards claims she was 'scared to leave' ex Aaron Phypers in emotional interview: 'It's survival'

Denise Richards has spoken openly about the difficulties she faced in her marriage to actor Aaron Phypers, describing the relationship as abusive. On the Dumb Blonde Podcast, she admitted that fear kept her from leaving, saying she felt “scared to leave” and eventually became “so beaten down” that the abuse felt normal.

Richards explained that Phypers changed dramatically after they married, leaving her feeling “conned” and trapped in a situation she never imagined herself in. She recalled the first time Phypers became physically violent, noting it happened after he received his green card.

Shocked by the incident, Richards remembered her father’s warning that “if a man hits you once, he’ll hit you again.” Though Phypers appeared remorseful afterward, she said he planted doubts in her mind that led her to downplay the abuse. Richards also revisited a widely discussed photo of her with a black eye, alleging the injury occurred after police responded to an argument at Phypers’ home.

Richards and Phypers’ marriage ended in 2025 when he filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences and requesting spousal support. Richards responded by obtaining a restraining order shortly after, also citing irreconcilable differences.

Reflecting on the marriage, Richards said she never thought she would be in such a situation, but now understands how difficult it can be for someone to leave an abusive relationship.

Her account underscores both the emotional toll of the marriage and the strength it took to move forward.
